What Is a Sump Pump?

First, let’s explain what the job of a primary sump pump is. During heavy rains or snow melts, water can seep through cracks in your home’s foundation and end up in your home’s basement or crawlspace, which can lead to expensive damage.

The sump pump is located in a basin called a sump pump pit below the main surface of the basement floor. Drains move water toward the sump pump, which pumps the water out of your house. This keeps your basement from flooding and causing severe water damage.

Common issues that can cause primary sump pumps to stop working include power outages, a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse, a clogged exit pipe, an overheated pump, a stuck float switch or an aging, underperforming pump.

What Is a Backup Sump Pump?

The point of a battery backup sump pump is to continue moving water away from the home in the case your primary sump pump fails for one of the aforementioned reasons. A battery backup sump pump is installed next to your main sump pump. Unlike your main sump pump, though, it has a battery, providing a secondary power source that can operate the pump if power has failed (remember that when you lose power, your primary sump pump will not operate). If the power fails and the water rises, the backup sump pump is automatically activated.

Also, if there is a strong storm that causes more rainwater to enter the sump basin than the primary pump can handle, the backup pump will turn on to provide additional pumping capacity, keeping your basement dry.
